Questions about slate roofs
Weather, old slates, prices and paperwork. If your question is not here, call 01632 960 831 or email [email protected].
Before you book
Call 01632 960 831Do you work in the rain?
We don’t hang slate in heavy rain or high wind. We sheet the roof and return when the weather allows. For storm call-outs, we assess the damage and make temporary repairs when conditions allow safe access.
Can you match old slates?
Usually. Reclaimed Welsh slate in the common sizes can usually be found locally, and new Welsh slate is still quarried locally.
How can the slate size be found?
Measure a fallen slate in inches and find it on the slate-size guide. If none has fallen, we’ll measure at the survey.
Is there a charge for the survey?
No. There is no charge for it and no obligation to go ahead.
What does a call-out cost?
The call-out charge is £95 including VAT, and covers getting to you and the first hour on site. After that it is £48 an hour including VAT. We tell you on the phone before anyone sets off.
Are you insured, and is the work guaranteed?
Business details are omitted from this design preview.
How long does a re-roof take?
On a terraced house, two to three weeks once the scaffold is up, weather allowing. The quote gives the number of weeks.
Is planning permission needed?
Like-for-like re-slating usually doesn’t need planning permission. Listed buildings and conservation areas may need consent; check with the planning authority (Cyngor Gwynedd) first.
What happens to the old slates?
Sound ones go back on your roof or are kept for your repairs. Broken ones are taken away.
